The iPhone 18 Pro Max and iPhone 17 Pro Max look almost identical. Same 6.9-inch screen, same silhouette, same Face ID. The changes are underneath — and one of them is the biggest battery improvement Apple has ever claimed for an iPhone.
Here is the complete comparison, written for someone deciding whether to spend about ₦2.9 million in Nigeria.
Price note: naira figures are estimates from Nigerian sellers dated 10 September 2026. There is no official Apple Nigeria price.

Battery: the headline change

Apple redesigned the battery and leaned on silicon efficiency to claim up to 45 hours of video playback on eSIM-only Pro Max models and up to 30 hours of real-world usage on a charge, based on a new usage model built from real data. A five-minute charge gives around seven hours of video playback.
For Nigeria this is the most practically valuable change in the whole phone. A day of Lagos traffic, hotspot duty, WhatsApp calls and camera use no longer needs a mid-afternoon rescue.
Note the small print: eSIM-only models carry the larger battery because they drop the SIM tray, and Apple sells those only in a fixed list of countries that does not include Nigeria. A unit with a SIM tray has slightly less capacity — about two hours less video playback. See our SIM guide.
Camera: variable aperture arrives
The 48MP Fusion Main camera now physically changes aperture using six laser-cut blades, from ƒ/1.48 for low light to ƒ/4 for group photos where the back row must stay sharp. There is a new sensor, a new computational imaging pipeline, manual Pro controls including shutter speed and a histogram, and Apple Reference Image, which signs sensor data so a photo can be proved unedited.
Video gains too: Cinematic effects can be applied after recording at up to 60fps, time-lapse can record in 4K Dolby Vision, and Audio Mix can isolate music. Details in the camera explainer.
Performance and heat
The A20 Pro sits on a 2nm process with a 6-core CPU, a 7-core GPU up to 40% faster than the A19 Pro, and a Dual 16-core Neural Engine. More important for Nigeria is the thermal design: memory moved out of the chip's heat path, and a vapour chamber with three times the surface area, for up to 40% better sustained performance.
Translation: it stays fast during long recordings and long games, in hot rooms. See heat and power conditions.
What is the same
- The 6.9-inch panel and its resolution class
- Face ID, USB-C, the general design language
- The three-camera layout
- Pro-level video capability
Burgundy is new; black, silver and glacier round out the range.
Should you upgrade?
Yes, if:
- Your 17 Pro Max battery health has dropped below roughly 80%
- You shoot professionally and want aperture control
- You record long video and hit heat limits
- Your trade-in plus a top-up makes the numbers work
No, if:
- Your 17 Pro Max is healthy — it remains one of the best phones on earth and will get years of updates
- You are financing the difference
- Your use is calls, chat, banking, social media and casual photos
