If you bought the iPhone 15 Pro Max, you have had three years of excellent service. This is the generation gap where an upgrade genuinely feels like a new phone rather than a refreshed one.

Here is everything that changed, and what it costs in Nigeria.

Price note: naira figures are Nigerian retailer estimates dated 10 September 2026, not official Apple prices.

The four upgrades you will feel every day

Official Apple image of the smaller Dynamic Island on iPhone 18 Pro

1. Battery, twice over. Your three-year-old battery has lost capacity — probably a lot of it. You are not comparing spec sheets, you are comparing a tired cell against Apple's biggest battery-life claim ever: up to 45 hours of video playback, up to 30 hours of real usage, and around seven hours of video from a five-minute charge. In Nigeria, where power is not a given, this is the upgrade.

2. The camera changes physically. Variable aperture uses six laser-cut blades to move between four settings — ƒ/1.48 to gather light in dark rooms, ƒ/4 to keep a whole group sharp. Your 15 Pro Max had one fixed opening and software. Read what variable aperture means.

3. It stops getting hot and slow. The 15 Pro Max had no vapour chamber. The 18 Pro Max has one with three times the surface area of last year's, and Apple moved the memory out of the chip's heat path. Long recordings, long games, hot rooms — see heat and power in Nigeria.

4. Speed you will notice, not just measure. Three chip generations, 50% more memory bandwidth than even last year, and double the AI processing. Photo processing, video export and on-device Siri AI all move faster.

What has not changed much

  • Face ID and the general design language
  • USB-C, introduced on the 15 Pro
  • The three-camera layout
  • The screen is bigger — 6.9 inches versus 6.7 — but not a different class of display

The Nigerian money question

At about ₦2.9 million for the 256GB iPhone 18 Pro Max, this is a serious outlay. Two routes make sense:

Route 1: trade up. A clean 15 Pro Max still fetches a strong price in the Nigerian used market. Get several quotes rather than accepting the first offer, sell it, and add the difference. Buy from a seller with a physical address using our checklist and safe-buying guide.

Route 2: replace the battery instead. If the only real problem is endurance, a genuine battery replacement costs a fraction of a new phone and buys you another two years. Ask an Apple Authorised Service Provider, not a roadside repairer using an unbranded cell. This is the advice most sites will not give you because it does not sell phones.

Route 3: step sideways and keep the money. Sell the 15 Pro Max and buy a very good phone from our under ₦500,000 range. You lose the Pro camera, you keep well over ₦2 million. For most households that is not a close call. See iPhone 18 Pro alternatives.

One thing to check before importing

Apple's eSIM-only models — with no SIM tray, and the larger battery that produces the 45-hour figure — are sold in twelve markets including the US and UAE. Nigeria is not one of them. Confirm what you are buying: does the iPhone 18 Pro have a physical SIM in Nigeria?
