Apple did something different this year. At its September 2026 event it launched the iPhone 18 Pro, the iPhone 18 Pro Max and the foldable iPhone Duo — but not a standard iPhone 18. If you were planning to buy the cheaper model, you are in a waiting game, and it helps to know exactly what you are waiting for.

What is confirmed

iPhone 18 Pro — announced 9 September 2026, pre-orders 12 September, shipping 18 September in 65 countries (Nigeria not among them):

  • 6.3-inch Super Retina XDR OLED, 120Hz, smaller Dynamic Island
  • A20 Pro chip, 2nm, with a 7-core GPU up to 40% faster than the A19 Pro and a Dual 16-core Neural Engine
  • New vapour chamber, three times the surface area, up to 40% better sustained performance
  • 48MP Fusion Main camera with variable aperture, ƒ/1.48 to ƒ/4, plus Pro controls and Apple Reference Image
  • Up to 36 hours video playback (eSIM-only models); ~50% charge in 15 minutes
  • 256GB to 2TB; black, silver, glacier, burgundy
  • $1,199 in the US, £1,199 in the UK, about ₦2.5 million from Nigerian sellers

iPhone Duo — Apple's first foldable, $1,999 for 256GB, pre-orders from 16 October, shipping 23 October.

iPhone 18 (standard) — not announced. No confirmed specifications, price or date.

Price note: naira figures are Nigerian retailer estimates dated 10 September 2026.

What a standard iPhone 18 would probably look like

Based on how Apple has separated Pro and non-Pro models for years — and this is expectation, not fact:

  • A slightly smaller or similar screen, most likely without the Pro's fastest refresh behaviour
  • The previous or a non-Pro version of the chip
  • A simpler camera system, almost certainly without variable aperture
  • A lower price, historically a few hundred dollars below the Pro
  • Fewer storage options, and probably a smaller base capacity

Apple has never given its brand-new camera hardware to the entry model in year one. If variable aperture is what you want, waiting for the standard iPhone 18 is unlikely to deliver it.

Should you wait?

Wait if:

  • Your current phone works and you simply want the cheapest new iPhone
  • The camera is not your reason for buying
  • You can be patient without a fixed date, since Apple has not given one

Do not wait if:

  • Your phone is broken or dying now
  • You need the Pro camera for work
  • You would end up spending months on a phone that frustrates you daily to save money on a product with no announced launch

The third option nobody mentions: the moment a new generation lands, the previous generation gets cheaper — including on the Nigerian used market. A clean iPhone 17 or 17 Pro right now is far better value than it was a week ago. Read iPhone 18 Pro vs iPhone 17 Pro to see exactly what you would be giving up.

The Nigerian reality check

Even a "cheap" new iPhone is expensive here once shipping, customs and margin are added. Nigeria was not in Apple's first launch wave, so early stock always carries a premium, and there is no official Apple Nigeria store — everything comes through resellers and importers. See where to buy safely.

Meanwhile, every phone we list sits between ₦60,000 and ₦500,000, is available today, and takes a Nigerian SIM without any eSIM debate:

Our advice

If you want an iPhone and can wait, wait — but watch the used market for the outgoing generation rather than holding out indefinitely for an unannounced model. If you need a phone this month, buy the best phone your budget genuinely covers. Message us with your budget and we will send three options today.
