Apple finally made a folding iPhone. The iPhone Duo was announced alongside the iPhone 18 Pro on 9 September 2026, starts at $1,999 for 256GB, and goes on pre-order 16 October with shipping from 23 October.

The iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199 and shipped from 18 September. So the question is simple: is the folding one worth $800 more?

Price note: Nigeria was not in Apple's first launch wave for either phone. Naira quotes here are estimates dated 10 September 2026 from Nigerian sellers and conversions at an indicative ₦1,350 to the dollar.

What the iPhone 18 Pro gives you

Everything Apple's engineering effort went into this year, in a shape that has been refined for a decade:

  • A20 Pro chip on a 2nm process, with a 7-core GPU up to 40% faster than the A19 Pro
  • A new vapour chamber with triple the surface area, for up to 40% better sustained performance
  • The 48MP Fusion Main camera with variable aperture from ƒ/1.48 to ƒ/4, Pro controls and Apple Reference Image
  • Up to 36 hours of video playback on eSIM-only models, 50% charge in about 15 minutes
  • 256GB to 2TB storage

What the iPhone Duo gives you

A folding iPhone in grade 5 titanium, polished to a mirror finish, in star white or night sky. A big internal screen when you open it, a phone-sized screen when you close it, and the novelty of being first.

We are deliberately not listing detailed foldable specifications here, because Apple's launch information for the Duo is far thinner than for the Pro, and we do not publish numbers we cannot verify.

The case against buying a first-generation foldable in Nigeria

Official Apple photo of the foldable iPhone Duo being opened

1. Repairs. A folding screen is the most expensive component in consumer electronics. Independent repairers in Nigeria will not have parts, tools or experience for a first-generation Apple foldable for a long time. Standard Pro-series screen replacements already run into six figures here — see screen replacement costs.

2. Dust and heat. Hinges and dust are old enemies, and Nigeria has plenty of dust — harmattan season particularly. Add a phone that lives in a pocket in 33°C.

3. First-generation risk. Every folding phone line has improved substantially by its second or third version. Creases, hinge wear and coating durability are the classic teething problems.

4. No local support path. Nigeria has no Apple Store. If the Duo needs service, it likely travels.

5. Insurance and resale. Neither is straightforward for a rare, extremely expensive device in this market.

Who the Duo actually suits

  • People who read, edit, present or work on the phone and genuinely want a tablet-sized screen in a pocket
  • People who will use it for a year, resell abroad and move on
  • People for whom $1,999 plus import costs is genuinely discretionary spending

Who should buy the iPhone 18 Pro instead

Almost everyone else. It is the phone Apple has been refining for years, it has this year's best camera hardware, it is repairable in Nigeria at a known — if painful — price, and it costs $800 less before you even add import charges.

And the honest third option

Both of these are, for most Nigerians, unaffordable. If you have read this far out of curiosity rather than intent, our catalogue runs from ₦60,000 to ₦500,000 and includes phones that do everything most people need:
